Westbourne Woods Walk for August
This walk will start from the entrance to the Royal Canberra Golf Club Bentham Street Yarralumla at 9.30am on Sunday 13 August.
The guided walk takes you through parts of the historic arboretum and lasts about 2 hours.
The guide will be Jim Laity and the theme of the walk is be ‘Trees from the Arboretum into Parks and Gardens’
During this walk Jim will talk about the information that can be gained from old trees growing in arboreta that can be used to select species for planting in streets and parks. Important factors include the height and spread of mature specimens, likely maintenance requirements to maintain aesthetic qualities and the need to address safety issues during the life of the tree. Old trees can give a good indication of the age when trees may have to be removed and replaced.
These issues are now becoming important in older areas of Canberra.
Jim has been actively involved in the management of trees in Canberra for 40 years. A 30-year career in Parks and Gardens and 12 years assessing trees in accordance with the Tree Protection Act gives him the experience and knowledge to talk about all the issues around trees in public landscapes. Jim has plenty of stories relating to some of the more unusual management issues that have arisen. There will be time to address specific issues that people on the walk may want to raise in an informal manner. As a keen walker, he will maintain a pace enough to keep warm even on a cold Sunday morning.
